About Chelsea Lesner-Buxton

Biography

My name is Chelsea Lesner-Buxton, and I am a 28-year-old disability rights advocate. I am visually impaired, have a mental illness, and identify in the queer community. I was born with low vision and became legally blind at the age of 25. I got diagnosed with major depression and generalized anxiety at the age of 21, although I was dealing with it for much longer. I have job experience working as an attendant for people with dementia and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I also have experience volunteering for a mental health advocacy group where I hosted meetings about the link to being in the LGBTQ+ community and mental illness. In 2021 I spoke at a statewide peer mental health conference. In my downtime, you can find me jamming out to Taylor Swift or playing with my dog.

My Recovery Story

Recovery has not been an easy road for me. I grew up in an abusive home where my mental illness developed at an early age. It took me years and a hospital stay to finally recognize that I truly needed help. I have been hospitalized twice and in an outpatient program, both of which helped in their own ways. I was finally able to leave my home of origin at the age of 25 and although I’ve have rough patches during my recovery I have gained so many useful coping skills. Now at 28 I am at the happiest I have ever been and feel like I’m truly in a spot where I can help others now.

My Motivation To Help

I have had a serious history of mental illness which includes hospitalization and outpatient treatment programs. I think about all the people that I had met through this and how much they selflessly helped me even though they didn’t know me. I want to be able to give that back to someone who is going through a similar experience as I did.
