About the host
I am a female Air Force veteran who has been out of the military for ten years. During this period, I have actively worked towards my mental health recovery. Some of my hobbies are making art, teaching yoga, and pursuing my studies. I live with my wife, Becky, and our two cats, Pretzel and Princess Dax. Throughout my journey of mental health recovery, I have undergone various therapeutic modalities as a client. Practicing yoga, spending time with loved ones, maintaining a balanced diet, and embracing spirituality have been essential for my healing process. For many years, I believed staying silent and invisible was the only way to keep myself safe. However, I later realized that this was a lie. I now want to help others break free from this silence and embark on their journey towards wholeness.
Motivation for help
I have spent years believing that I had to be silent and invisible to be safe. It took years for me to recognize that as a lie. I want to help guide others out of silence.

Randi, did great this time. She lead the group well. She shared her experiences as well. She aloud everyone the opportunity to speak. I pray that the ones who didn't speak felt the love and support from the rest of us.

Lori did a good job of moving the discussion along and tried to get to everyone’s topic. She shared her personal experiences.

This was my first and now the last online support group I will ever be participating in. During the meeting, a participant asked for advice on how to prepare for an interview without feeling anxious. I felt like I could relate and help her with some tips and tricks I have used in the past. While I was speaking and giving her my advice, I was interrupted by Randi G. who said, "She has done all of those things already." This made me feel embarrassed, dismissed, and that what I was saying really didn’t matter. I have decided that I will never attend or participate in a meeting with HeyPeers ever again. People who attend and actually participate as I was doing in these meetings are there to help others and should not be dismissed or cut off. Thank you, Randi G. for a traumatizing experience.

Nancy did a good job of moving the discussion forward. She shared her own experiences. I didn’t get a chance to discuss my topic but it probably wasn’t clear that it was a topic.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is the leading peer-focused national organization focused on depression and bipolar disorder. DBSA's peer-based, wellness-oriented, and empowering services and resources are available when people need them, where they need them, and how they need to receive them. This includes online and local support groups, audio and video casts, and printed materials distributed by DBSA, our chapters, and mental health care facilities across America.

DBSA online support groups provide people living with depression and bipolar disorder a place to share experiences, discuss coping skills, and offer hope to one another. DBSA support groups are peer-led, meaning they are facilitated by someone living with a mood disorder who has been trained and certified to guide others on their journey.

DBSA online support group meetings are peer-based self-help groups. In the DBSA context, a peer is a person with a mood disorder. Another distinction of peer is that we are not professionals - physicians and other mental health providers. We are here to assist, encourage, and enable each other to help ourselves.

Please note that the schedule for DBSA support group meetings on HeyPeers has been updated for 2024. To see all available meetings through DBSA, or to find alternatives if you are waitlisted for a group, visit https://www.dbsalliance.org/support/chapters-and-support-groups/.
