About this meeting
NAMI Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for any adult family member or close friend who is supporting a loved one living with mental illnesses. Gain insight from the challenges and successes of others facing similar experiences, build understanding and awareness, and connect with others. The groups are led by trained leaders with lived experience. Meetings are 90 minutes long. This group meets on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month. The meeting will be closed to late arrivals 15 minutes after the start time.

About the host
I am retired, living with my husband and adult daughter. In our family we deal with ADHD, depression and anxiety, but we love and support each other, and are well treated for our issues. I facilitate the NAMI St. Cloud Family Support Group, that meets twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7:00 PM on Hey Peers. I also prepare the quarterly NAMI St. Cloud newsletter, and am a former member of the NAMI St. Cloud board. I also help out with our Mental Health walk, and the Annual Fall Conference. I strongly believe in education and support for those who deal with a mental illness, as well as those family members, friends and others who love and care for someone who is affected by mental illness.

One or two people almost dominated. The leader needs to stick with a timeframe, say allowing each person to give a short five-minute intro on why they’re there, so that everyone has a chance to talk, and then, stick to a schedule. The group leader needs to take control and follow a schedule but leave time for questions or conversations in the end or at some point if they decide to.

Tonight's meeting was very good, despite some fairly minor technical issues. There was a variety of issues discussed, a nice mix of participants, and everyone was polite and listened to whomever was speaking before commenting. Kudos to all. Good facilitating, Cecil!!!

NAMI Minnesota

NAMI Minnesota champions justice, dignity and respect for all people affected by mental illnesses. Through education, support and advocacy we strive to eliminate the pervasive stigma of mental illnesses, affect positive changes in the mental health system, and increase the public and professional understanding of mental illnesses.

NAMI Minnesota offers many support groups for adults living with mental illnesses and their families. Our free support groups are led by trained volunteers with lived experience. Support groups provide a welcoming, respectful, and safe space to build awareness and understanding while learning from and connecting with others.  The two main populations we serve are adults living with mental illnesses and adults with loved ones who are living with mental illnesses.
